Its 1856, and you’re getting ready for bed, and all of a sudden you start hearing singing. You look outside and it’s a group of runaway slaves and Harriett Tubman trying to get to Canada. You are part of the Underground Railroad so you stop them and tell them you can provide them some food and blankets, but they can’t spend the night because people have searched the house many times. You give them what you promised, and they are on their way. You still don’t get a good night sleep because you fell that you should have done more.
The Underground Railroad is not a railroad at all; in fact is not underground either. The Underground Railroad is a network of many houses and farms that wanted to help the runaway slaves escape from their owners. They traveled during the night as quiet as possible. Many of the slaves were tired and worn out by the time they got to a “safe house.” A safe house is a white family’s house that was safe for slaves to stay in and get a warm meal and a good night rest. Still at the safe houses they might not always get good sleep because often they could here bloodhounds and other dogs barking. Those dogs were looking for them.
